Our Ancestral Heritage & Heraldic Story
The Skedgel’s Story
We have started to trace the origin of the Skedgel family, this is Tish’s family tree on her father’s side.
We will update this part of our site as we go or when we have enough information to add.
We are working on the make up of the heraldic shield and coat of arms and will post this as soon as we have it.
In our story so far we have researched back to 1806.
Peter Skedgel born 1806 in Halwill a small hamlet within the Parish of Dittisham South Devon His trade was agricultural labourer. He met and married Mary Ann from Ivybridge who gave him three children, Mark (Henry M Skedgel) born 1841, Isaac born 1845, and William born 1852. He died in 1867 and was interned at Totnes in Devon.
Henry Mark Skedgel was born in Dittisham a small fishing village on the banks of the River Dart, the family moved to live Brixham at 167 Higher street. He met and married Miriam from Poole in Dorset in June 1865, she gave him six children, John born 1868, Edith born 1870, Alfred born 1871, Ralph born 1874, Ann born 1877, and Caroline born 1880. Ralph’s trade was as a shipwright working at the shipyard at Brixham. He died in September 1913 and was interned at Totnes also.
Ralph Skedgel born 2 December 1874 in Brixham Devon in his early years he lived at 110 Higher St Brixham and studied for his vocation as a marine engineer. He met and married Eliza Mary (Grandma Werry) 27th January 1898 in Brixham Parish Church. She bore him six children, Ralph born 1899, James Harold born 1901, died 1950, Alice Mary born Sept 1909 died Sept 1986, Edith Annie born 5th June 1911 died 1st May 1967, Lesley George born 13th December 1913, and Whinnie the youngest. Eliza (Garndma Werry) was born Nov 1874 in St. Blazey Cornwall and died 25th Sept 1951 aged 77. Ralph died 10th March 1946.

Lesley George born 1913 in Brixham Devon in his early years he lived at 77 Ranscombe St Brixham. He joined the Army for the war effort in the supplies division and served in North Africa, on returning to Blighty he met Nancy Ada Rintoul (see Rintoul family tree) while working at Chards the provisions people in Torbay and married her in March 1940, they setup home together at South field first before starting the guest-house business at Casita. They had four children Michael John born Jan 1945- died Mar 1945, Patricia Muriel born Sept 1946, Maureen Ann born Feb 1949, Anthony James born Dec 1950 died Dec 1990. Lesley went into the Estate agents business following introductions from his father-in-law James Rintoul. Nancy was born 11th Aug 1915 at 47 Morgan Avenue Torquay to James and Ada Rintoul, she died 25th Feb 2008 at Roseville. Les died 4th July 1992
Patricia Muriel born in Sept 1946 married Nicholas Farr in 1969
