Our Ancestral Heritage & Heraldic Story
The Foy’s Story
We have started to trace the origin of the Foy family, this is also Tish’s family tree on her mother’s mother side You will notice we have displayed two coat of arms, on the right is the English descendants and on the left is the Irish arms there is a third which is the French families. We will update this part of our site as we go or when we have enough information to add.
We have been working on the make up of the heraldic shield and coat of arms which is as follows.
The Foy Coat of Arms is recorded in Thomas Robson's "The British Herald" which was published in 1830.
We have so far traced the Foy family back to 1825 in the person of William Foy and this is their story.
William Foy born 1825 in Porlock Somerset he worked as a farm hand on his father in law’s farm of 53 acres married to Mary who bore him five children, Walter born 1853, Ann Marie born 1857, Edwin J born 1859, Thomas Herbert 1867 and Albert G Foy born 1872, William died at the age of 80 in 1905 at Williton
Walter Foy born September 1853 at Porlock Somerset. In 1884 he married Elizabeth Bennetto and she gave him four children, Annie born 1886, Ada Lillian born 1887, Walter jnr born 1890 and William born 1893. Walter built his profession was watchmaker and jeweler and the family business was to be found in Watchet. Remembered fondly by the younger family members when we visited in recent years with trish’s mum Nancy Ada (Ada Lillian’s name sake) remembering happy days when they went to watchet in the school holidays to stay with Granddad Walter.
Ada Lillian Foy nee Rintoul born March 1887 at Watchet Somerset, her life was short lived due to illness but during her short life she met and married James Webster Rintoul and in the course of their brief time together she bore James three children Muriel born 1912, Nancy Ada born 1915 and Marjorie born in 1916. Unfortunately Muriel contracted a terminal illness and died earliy in 1931 having been nursed by her mother Ada who contracted septicemia and died in June of that year at the age of 44. Ada Lillian pictured right at happier times.
Nancy Ada Foy nee Skedgel born 11th August 1915 in her younger years Nancy worked as receptionist for a local hotel before taking a pre war job at Chards where she met Lesley George who was a fellow worker, romance blossomed but before anything could be planned Les was called up for the war effort enrolled in the supplies and ordinance division keeping the army feed. During leave from the front in March 1940 Les and Nancy were married (pictured right) At the end of the war they settled down to married life Les went into the family business as an estate agent with his father in law.They had four children Michael John born 1945, Patricia Muriel born 1946, Maureen Ann(Mo) born 1949 and Anthony James born 1950 died 1991. ancy passed away 25th Feb 2008 at the ripe age of 92 peacefully at Roseville.
